10 Best Zoos in the World
Lots of animal and plant species spread all over the world. Some of them are almost extinct. Therefore, humans try to breed them. One of them, of course, by taking care of them at the zoo.
When their original habitat has been damaged due to natural disasters or human negligence, then the only way to maintain their population is to make a replica of their habitat in the zoo.
In the following, we have summarized some of the largest zoos and the largest collection of animal species in the world.
1. Pretoria Zoo
Pretoria Zoo is the largest zoo in South Africa and is one of the best zoos in the world. More than 600,000 people visit the zoo every year. This zoo has an area of 85 hectares. In it, you can see 3,117 specimens from 209 mammal species, 1,358 specimens from 202 bird species, 3,871 specimens from 190 fish species, 388 specimens from 4 invertebrate species, 309 specimens from 93 reptile species, and 44 specimens from 7 amphibian species.
2. Zoological Society of London
This zoo is a famous tourist spot and the oldest zoo in the world. In 1828 when this place was opened, initially only people from the Society received permission to access this scientific zoo. Then in 1847, the zoo was opened to the public to help with funding. The London ZSL Zoo has an area of 14 hectares and holds 698 animal species, with 20,166 individuals.
3. San Diego Zoo
San Diego Zoo is home to 3,000 animals with more than 300 species and there is a famous botanical collection of more than 3,500 species and 1.75 million specimens. In this zoo more than 730 hectares of the National Park has been set aside as habitat for native species.
4. The Bronx Zoo
The Bronx Zoo is the biggest and the most comprehensive metropolitan zoo in the United States. This zoo consists of parks and natural habitats covering an area of 107 hectares divided by the Bronx River. When you visit there, you can see more than 6,000 animals from 700 species, many of which are endangered.
5. Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium
The Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium is the only Zoo that has some of the largest indoor cages in the world. Henry Doorly Zoo has more than 900 species. This zoo is famous for its large cage. This place also has one of the largest indoor rainforests in the world called "Lied Forest".
6. Vienna Zoo
This zoo is the best in Europe. More than 700 species of animals, some of which are threatened, have found homes here and opportunities to survive as a species.
7. Singapore Zoo
The Singapore Zoo (formerly known as the Singapore Zoological Gardens) opened in 1973 with a modest collection of around 300 animals from around 70 species. This zoo is located in the cape of the Seletar Reservoir.
The Singapore Zoo adopts an "open concept" in which animals are placed in open cages arranged to resemble their natural habitat.
The zoo currently receives more than 1.7 million visitors each year and is now inhabited by more than 2,800 animals representing more than 300 species, of which 26 percent are threatened.
8. St. Louis Zoo
St. Louis Zoo has more than 13,000 animals with 555 species, many of which are rare and endangered. St. Louis Zoo is perceived as a main zoo in creature the executives, research, preservation, and instruction.
9. Toronto Zoo
Toronto Zoo is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This zoo has an area of 287 hectares. Toronto Zoo is the largest zoo in Canada and 5,000 animals are consisting of 460 different species.
10. Tallinn Zoo
Tallinn Zoo is located in Tallinn and is the only zoo in Estonia. This zoo holds more than 13,000 animals representing more than 584 species with an area of approximately 90 hectares. Some of the animals housed here are golden eagles, Eurasian eagles, white tip reef sharks, axis deer, Amur leopards, black rhinos, yellow anacondas, and many more.
